HTC One X review

HTC One X review
The HTC One X is a welcome return to form for HTC, says Matt Warman

HTC’s flagship new phone is big and beautiful – but at £35 a month or more on a two-year contract, it’s aiming to compete with top of the range handsets from Samsung and Apple and it needs to impress.
Even before you’ve turned the device on, it does. A scratch-resistant ‘Gorilla Glass’ 4.7” screen runs seemingly over the edges of a matt plastic back, and the 130g device is just 8.9mm thick. Switched on, the screen is the best currently available on an Android device and arguably even better than the iPhone. Colours are warm and images are sharp.
Key to using the phone, however, is the software rather than the hardware: so the fact that the One X has a processor that’s also faster than any other currently on the market is somewhat academic. Indeed, fast as the device is the main noticeable impact of that technology is its detrimental effect on battery life – heavy smartphone users will need to charge this during the day, perhaps even more so than the X’s rivals.
Of the features that stand out, however, first is the device’s excellent camera, which takes some of the sharpest images I’ve yet seen on any mobile phone and also offers easy editing features. Second is the integration with online storage system Dropbox – 25gb come free for two years, so you can store all your music, documents and photos without fear of ever losing them again. This may not be innovative but it’s certainly impressive and useful.
In a way, however, it’s the smaller features that make the One X so impressive – it runs the latest version of Google’s operating system, called Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s been enhanced by HTC’s newly streamlined Sense interface. So Google offers users the chance to reject an incoming phone call and simultaneously send a text message saying ‘I’ll call you right back’. HTC adds an automatic reminder to actually do so. Users who also purchase the driving kit will find that the phone is the best satnav they’re likely to have used, thanks to big on screen buttons and live traffic information. Again, not innovative but beautifully done.

Clever additional touches include building in a host of widgets, to add contacts, social media feeds or just simple access to document editing. There are even apps to turn your phone into a mirror or a torch, as well as excellent audio from Beats.
Is the One X as instantly intuitive as an iPhone? No. But does it offer more power and more possibilities? Yes. It’s the first phone of its generation and as such it’s the phone I’d buy right now because it's (arguably) the best phone on the market. It remains to be seen how long that will be the case, but it’s more than likely to hold its own against the coming competition.

Apple Looking Into Wireless Charging, HTC’s Profit Declines

Today’s Top Stories: Apple Looking Into Wireless Charging, HTC’s Profit Declines
Social Media Newsby Stan Schroeder on Mashable

Welcome to this morning’s edition of “First To Know,” a series in which we keep you in the know on what’s happening in the digital world. Today, we’re looking at three particularly interesting stories.
Twitter Sues Five Major Spammers
Twitter has filed a suit against five web tools and providers that allegedly make it easier to spam people on Twitter. Facebook, Google and Yahoo have filed similar lawsuits in the past, and Twitter claims the lawsuits send “a clear message to all would-be spammers that there are serious and costly consequences” to violating Twitter’s rules.
Apple Interested In Wireless Power Charging
Apple has filed a patent application for a system that would enable wireless charging of the devices in its stores, AppleInsider has learned. The patent application proposes a special packaging for products such as iPhone or an iPad, which could act as a RF power transmitter.
HTC Posts Huge Profit and Revenue Drops
HTC’s quarterly results are in, and they’re not pretty. The company’s profit in Q1 2012 was $151 million, a 70% drop from a year earlier, and revenues were $2.3 billion – a 35 percent decline. HTC’s CFO Winston Yung has described the situation quite candidly in a conference call: “We simply dropped the ball on products in the fourth quarter,” he said.

Sprint Unveils HTC Evo 4G LTE Smartphone [PICS]

Sprint Unveils HTC Evo 4G LTE Smartphone [PICS]
By Peter Pachal on Mashable

HTC EVO 4G LTE from SprintSprint and HTC just unveiled an LTE version of the popular Evo smartphone that helped put HTC on the map in the U.S. Officially called the HTC Evo 4G LTE, it’ll will be available exclusively on Sprint this spring for $199.99.
You may be a little confused. Yes, we said Sprint, and yes, we said LTE. Sprint so far hasn’t deployed a high-speed LTE network, and it didn’t announce an official launch at this evening’s event. But the frequencies are settled, the chips are ready and the network will begin rollout later this year (first in Texas, Atlanta, and Baltimore). The Evo 4G LTE will be ready for that network when it arrives.
In the meantime, it’s got plenty of features to keep customers interested. Chief among them is the camera, an 8-megapixel shooter that performs well in low light and has an easy-to-use burst mode that snaps 4 pics per second for as long as you hold it (it’ll stop itself eventually). It can also capture still pics while shooting 1080p video.
Those pics will look nice and big on the Evo’s hefty 4.7-inch “super” LCD screen. The biggie-size screen looked fairly bright in our brief hands-on, and it follows the current trend of large-size screens spreading to more phones, with one extremely notable exception. Don’t worry, though, the new HTC Evo is no brick. It’s a relatively svelte 8.98 mm, and felt quite comfortable to hold.
The phone also has a first-ever feature for the U.S.: HD Voice. In an impressive demonstration, Sprint played a call from actor Kiefer Sutherland, starting out speaking on a typical, fairly muffled call which got slowly more unintelligible as background noise took over. Then the call switched over to HD Voice, and Sutherland’s voice came through crystal clear.
HD Voice works via a combination of tech on the phone and tech on the network. Although Sprint says HD Voice doesn’t depend on 4G (or even 3G) connectivity, it’s limited only to Sprint-to-Sprint calls. The tech isn’t proprietary to either Sprint or HTC, but the carriers have yet to work out how each one’s implementation will interact with other networks.
Other notable specs include Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.6GHz dual-core processor, NFC, 16GB of on-board memory, with a micro-SD slot under the hood for up-to an additional 32GB of storage, Beats Audio, Android 4.0, and a kickstand — a feature which disappeared since the first Evo and has now returned.
How do you like the all-new LTE Evo? Sound off in the comments.

Porn Studio Vivid Wants HTC to Change the Name of Its Smartphone

Porn Studio Vivid Wants HTC to Change the Name of Its Smartphone
November 17, 2011 by Stan Schroeder on Mashable

Adult movie studio Vivid Entertainment wants HTC to change the name of one of its smartphones, HTC Vivid, as it fears users might think the two are somehow connected.

Vivid Entertainment has sent HTC a cease & desist letter, threatening legal action if HTC doesn’t change the name of the smartphone by next Monday, Nov 21.

HTC Vivid “creates the false impression that your company and your company’s products are affiliated, connected, or associated with and or sanctioned by Vivid Entertainment,” said Vivid’s attorney Mark Hoffman in a statement.

While it’s a bit far fetched to believe consumers would confuse a smartphone with a porn studio, it is true that Vivid offers content through a variety of digital channels, including smartphones.

HTC did not comment on the matter.

Vivid Entertainment has been around since 1984 and is considered to be one of the biggest adult movie studios. It produced thousands of adult movies, including the infamous Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian sex tapes.

Dr. Dre Headphone Maker To Buy MOG Music Service

Dr. Dre Headphone Maker To Buy MOG Music Service

March 21, 2012 by Kate Freeman

Headphone maker Beats (co-founded by Dr. Dre) is set to acquire music subscription service MOG, according to multiple reports.
Beats is majority-owned by Taiwanese smartphone makerHTC. There’s no information yet on the price of the deal.
The news began to trickle out on Monday when Business Insider reported that a single source leaked information of the acquisition. By Tuesday, multiple sources had come forward to confirm the rumor.
Mashable has reached out to a spokesperson for MOG and is waiting for a response.
Started in 2005, MOG is a music subscription service with 14 million songs. It does not have the name recognition of music-streaming sites such as Pandora or Spotify, despite often being mentioned alongside other top music services. MOG CEO David Hyman has reportedly said MOG has 500,000 users, but won’t say how many are paying subscribers.
Some have speculated that Beats’ interest in the company lies with its music subscription service and connections with major record labels.
Digital music subscription services have grown from 8 million users in 2011 to already 13 million subscribers in 2012, according to a study by International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). And digital music sales have grown for the first time since 2004. Gartner Inc., an IT research company, predicts that by 2015 online music sales will generate $7.7 billion dollars per year.
Just last month, MOG CEO David Hyman said the company had no plans to sell. HTC purchased a 51% stake in Beats Electronics in April 2011 for $309 million.
What do you think about this possible acquisition by Beats? Tell us in the comments.

New iPad Heats Up As Much as Android Tablets [REPORT]

The Heatgate – controversy around the alleged heating up of Apple’s new iPad – was probably never a real issue, and recent research adds more proof to that conclusion. PC World measured the heat levels of several Android tablets, including Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and they were comparable to Apple’s new iPad. It may run a little hotter than iPad 2, but it’s probably not too hot for most users.

Dual-Core Version of HTC One X Performs Strongly in Benchmarks

A series of benchmarks performed on AT&T’s version of HTC’s upcoming smartphone, the HTC One X, puts it far ahead of the competition in terms of speed. Unlike the European version of the device, which will be Tegra 3-based, the AT&T version sports a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor.

NASA Launches 5 ATREX Rockets

NASA has announced it has successfully launched 5 ATREX rockets on a mission to better understand the high-altitude jet stream located 60 to 65 miles above the surface of the Earth. The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX) mission will create an artificial cloud, allowing scientists and the public to “see” the winds in space.
