MasterCard Unveils PayPass Wallet Services, A New Way To Pay

MasterCard Unveils PayPass Wallet Services, A New Way To Pay
08/05/2012 by Emily Price on Mashable

MasterCard announced PayPass Wallet Services Monday, a new global offering that makes it easier and faster for customers to make purchases in stores and online, by allowing those purchases to be made with a single click or tap.

“We think of MasterCard’s mission as using technology to make payments safer, simpler, smarter and this is just one of the ways we’re progressing against that mission” Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments office, MasterCard told Mashable.

“We realize that when it comes to payments, no single wallet will rule them all. PayPass Wallet Services simplifies the shopping experience while providing flexibility and choice to merchants, banks and consumers,” says McLaughlin.

PayPass Wallet Services has three components: PayPass Acceptance Network, PayPass Wallet and PayPass API which together are designed to streamline your shopping experience no matter how you shop.

PayPass Acceptance Network: The PayPass acceptance network includes both online and contactless payments, and gives merchants a consistent way to accept electronics payments across multiple channels. NFC payments can be made in-store by tapping your mobile phone, and a new PayPass online element lets you check out at a retailer by clicking a PayPass button — automatically providing your shipping and payment information to a retailer without having to fill that information out each time you pay.

PayPass Wallet: PayPass wallet enables banks, merchants and partners to white label their own wallets. Consumers can store payment and shipping information in one secure place including American Express, Discover, Visa and other branded credit, debit and prepaid cards.

PayPass API: The PayPass API allows partners to connect their own wallets into the PayPass network, and lets those partners user MasterCard’s check-out, fraud detection and authentication services to allow their customers to make purchases wherever PayPass is accepted.

MasterCard will make PayPass Wallet Services available to partners in the third quarter of 2012, initially in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia later including other countries.

MasterCard’s first partners for the project include big names like American Airlines and Barnes & Noble. American will be integrating the PayPass Wallet into its mobile application, and Barnes & Noble will be including the PayPass online checkout button on its website.

“Consumers are at a pivotal point now where smartphone adoption has exploded and well over 50 percent of Americans own one,” says Marc Parish, vice president of retention and loyalty marketing for Barnes & Noble. “The technology that will allow customers to make mobile payments at the point of sale has already begun to make a different, and Barnes & Noble is proud to be leading retail in this technology shift”

Other partners include Jagex, JB Hi-Fi, MLB Advanced Media (MLB.com), Newegg, Runningshoes.com, TigerDirect.com and Wine Enthusiast Companies. MasterCard is also working with financial institutions such as Citibank, Fifth Third Bank, and National Bank of Canada. A number of technology partners are also already on board.

“MasterCard’s PayPass Wallet Services has the potential to streamline the payment process for consumers, whether they’re online or offline.” Mark Hung Research Director, Wireless at Garner told Mashable.

“The open nature of the PayPass Wallet looks promising: besides allowing competitors’ offerings to reside in the wallet (e.g., Visa, Amex, and Discover), the PayPass API allows other digital wallets to connect to MasterCard’s acceptance network as well,” says Hung. “It will be interesting to see when the full product will be launched, as well as the breadth of its partners that will be supporting this new initiative.”

The United States Olympic program might not have picked its basketball team yet, but the team already has a full lineup of sponsors.

USA Basketball, the nonprofit governing body for basketball in the United States and organizer of the Olympic basketball team, will announce Jeep as its newest sponsor and the Jeep Wrangler the “official vehicle partner of USA Basketball.”

Jeep will introduce an advertising campaign, called “Power Within,” next Saturday. As part of the campaign, Jeep will introduce a vehicle, the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Altitude.

The campaign will feature Chris Paul, a point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers and a finalist for the 2012 Olympic basketball team, as its spokesman. A television ad featuring Mr. Paul will include a voice-over and music by Common, and the tag line, “A legendary vehicle supporting a legendary team.”

Revenue from the partnership will be used to finance USA Basketball programs, including junior programs for boys and girls.

Some print ads and billboards featuring Mr. Paul and the Jeep have the headline, “Legendary Teams Live for the Road.” Digital elements of the campaign include a microsite, Jeep.com/USAB, which will include video interviews with Mr. Paul, a sweepstakes to win the new Jeep Wrangler, and live coverage of Jeep and USA Basketball events.

A kickoff party featuring Mr. Paul, Common and the D.J. Biz Markie was held Sunday in Los Angeles. In an interview, Jerry Colangelo, the USA Basketball chairman, described the partnership as “combining two great American brands, USA Basketball and Jeep.”

Ever since the Olympics began allowing professional players in the games, basketball has become one of the Games’ marquee events and a big draw for marketers. USA Basketball has 10 other sponsors, including American Express, Gatorade, Nike and Cisco Systems.

“Our role and job is not just to have someone sign an agreement with us,” Mr. Colangelo said of the corporate sponsors. “We want to help them achieve their objectives.”

Win $10,000 in Rand McNally, USA TODAY's Best of the Road rally

Win $10,000 in Rand McNally, USA TODAY's Best of the Road rally
By Laura Bly, USA TODAY

Looking for adventure, and ready to head out on the highway?

You could earn $10,000 as a winning team this summer in Rand McNally and USA TODAY's coast-to-coast rally, Best of the Road. Five amateur, two-person teams will leave Washington, D.C., on June 15, traveling scenic routes and back roads to seek out the "most fun," "most patriotic," "most beautiful," "best for food" or "friendliest" town in the USA before winding up in Seattle on July 15.

CAPTIONBest of the Road

To apply for the Best of the Road, interested teams (minimum age, 25) should upload a video of no more than one minute showcasing their skills as a cross-country traveler to bestoftheroad.com between April 23 and May 15, 2012. Contestants will be announced on May 24; most travel expenses for the road rally will be covered by USA TODAY and Rand McNally.

Each team will visit the six towns in their assigned category, while fans follow their progress through videos, photos and updates on bestoftheroad.com, travel.usatoday.com, Facebook and Twitter (@bestoftheroad and #bestoftheroad). The teams' findings will help determine the winner in each category; one team will win a $10,000 grand prize for submitting the best content on their cross-country adventure.

Civic boosters and visitor bureaus have already nominated 100 towns to compete for a spot on the route, and voting continues until May 15. More than 700 towns were nominated in last year's contest and rally, which crowned Sandpoint, Idaho, "most beautiful"; Walla Walla, Wash., "friendliest"; Rapid City, S.D., "most patriotic"; Glenwood Springs, Colo., "most fun" and Lafayette, La., "best for food."

This year, Opening Day festivities were documented on social networks such as Twitter and Instagram perhaps more than ever before. Teams, fans and players all posted shots celebrating the beginning of the 2012 baseball season in a variety of ways.

What were the best shots from Opening Day? Pixable.com is a New York City startup that sorts the most popular and timely of the millions of photos posted to social networks daily. The company provided Mashable with access to feeds showing which Opening Day baseball photos were gaining the most buzz and best capturing the magic of a new season.

Today’s Top Stories: HTC One X Looks Good in Benchmarks, NASA Launches 5 ATREX Rockets
March 27, 2012 by Stan Schroeder on Mashable

Welcome to this morning’s edition of “First To Know,” a series in which we keep you in the know on what’s happening in the digital world. Today, we’re looking at three particularly interesting stories.
Social Media News

New iPad Heats Up As Much as Android Tablets [REPORT]

The Heatgate – controversy around the alleged heating up of Apple’s new iPad – was probably never a real issue, and recent research adds more proof to that conclusion. PC World measured the heat levels of several Android tablets, including Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and they were comparable to Apple’s new iPad. It may run a little hotter than iPad 2, but it’s probably not too hot for most users.

Dual-Core Version of HTC One X Performs Strongly in Benchmarks

A series of benchmarks performed on AT&T’s version of HTC’s upcoming smartphone, the HTC One X, puts it far ahead of the competition in terms of speed. Unlike the European version of the device, which will be Tegra 3-based, the AT&T version sports a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor.

NASA Launches 5 ATREX Rockets

NASA has announced it has successfully launched 5 ATREX rockets on a mission to better understand the high-altitude jet stream located 60 to 65 miles above the surface of the Earth. The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX) mission will create an artificial cloud, allowing scientists and the public to “see” the winds in space.
