24/05/2012 by Christina Warren on Mashable

Instagram’s jaw-dropping $1 billion price tag became a lot more understandable on Thursday with the release of Facebook Camera for iOS.

The app — which was in development before the social network made its offer to buy Instagram about six weeks ago — gives us a glimpse at how Facebook was planning to compete against the young mobile-first startup.

It also showcases just how important Instagram is to Facebook’s future.

Google CEO Larry Page on Charlie Rose — Talks Facebook, Future of Google

Google CEO Larry Page on Charlie Rose — Talks Facebook, Future of Google
21/05/2012 by Kate Freeman on Mashable

Google CEO Larry Page talks Facebook, Oracle and the future of Google in an interview airing Monday night on Charlie Rose.

Page commented on the recent Facebook IPO saying, “I don’t want to speak about their thing. But I think it’s great to see that competition really — our competition and just the Valley is thriving.”

He also answers Rose’s questions regarding the possibility of Facebook overtaking search, to which Page says it’s “unfortunate” the company is so closed with its data. “In general, I think we’d like to see content on the Internet being made more open and so on,” he says.

Charlie Rose has interviewed dozens of notable figures in the tech field, including Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, Mark Zuckerberg and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, to name a few.

The PBS program will run at 11 p.m. on Monday and on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Bloomberg. Check this local station guide to find times in your area.

Watch ‘Zuckerberg: The Musical!’ [VIDEO]

Watch ‘Zuckerberg: The Musical!’ [VIDEO]
17/05/2012 by lauren@dailydot.com (Lauren Rae Orsini) for The Daily Dot on Mashable

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is having the best week ever. He turned 28 on Monday, and his company goes public later this week.

The timing couldn’t be better for him to be immortalized in song.

CDZA, a comedy troupe that performs “musical video experiments,” launched a musical Tuesday to chronologically document the history of Zuckerberg and his social network.

In 12 parts and just under four minutes, three bubbly blonde singers and a pianist vocalize the founder’s past eight years, from Harvard to the launch of the Facebook IPO. The musical variety spans the gamut of showtunes, from the melodies of West Side Story to Annie Get Your Gun.

Founded seven months ago, CDZA promises a new experimental musical every Tuesday. (Something to keep us entertained between Scumbag Thursdays, perhaps?)

The troupe’s previous two videos, “History of Lyrics That Aren’t Lyrics” and “History of Whistling,” suggest the group with continue with their efforts to document the past through song.

New ‘Facebook Terms and Policies Hub’ Answers Your Policy Questions

New ‘Facebook Terms and Policies Hub’ Answers Your Policy Questions
11/05/2012 by Sonia Paul on Mashable

Facebook, infamous for its changing policies and confusion among users about what they’re getting themselves into when they use the world’s largest social network, has finally aggregated all its terms and policies under the same roof.

That roof — Facebook.com/policies — contains, in the words of Facebook, “Everything you need to know, all in one place.” The Facebook Terms and Policies Hub, as it’s called, is clear and easy to navigate, with headlined links and sub-headlines. However, all of these links actually lead to a lot of information.

Clicking on the three big links — Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, Data Use Policy and Community Standards — leads you to details about privacy, account security and how your information is shared. It also links to information about Facebook’s position on just about everything controversial on the Internet, and by extension, on Facebook. Violence, bullying, hate speech, nudity and intellectual property are just a few of the issues on which Facebook has a firm stance.

The policies portal also has links regarding ads and sponsored stories, credits, pages, platform payment terms, promotions and branding resources.

A spokesperson for Facebook released the following statement regarding the new hub:

“This week, we began rolling out the Facebook Terms and Policies Hub, a central resource for all of our policies. Our hope is that this new resource will make our policies more transparent and accessible for the people who use Facebook by offering easy access to answers to specific policy questions ranging from platform to ads to content.”

With the range of policy questions aggregated under the Facebook policies hub, it’s a reminder of just how expansive the world’s largest social network is — and how important it is for users to keep up with Facebook as it continues to expand. Facebook privacy has always been a contentious issue among users, but the inclusion of topics like sponsored stories and page information under the same “policies” roof emphasizes something important: There are many different sides of Facebook. It’s not just a social network — it’s a business.

Are you satisfied with Facebook’s new terms and policies hub? Sound off in the comments.

Facebook announces App Center

Facebook announces App Center
by Paul Sloan | 10 May 2012 9:26am SGT

(Credit: Facebook)
Facebook put an important marker down today by announcing that it intends to offer what it calls an "App Center" in coming weeks.

"For the over 900 million people that use Facebook, the App Center will become the new, central place to find great apps like Draw Something, Pinterest, Spotify, Battle Pirates, Viddy, and Bubble Witch Saga," Facebook's Aaron Brady said in a blog post. "Everything has an app detail page, which helps people see what makes an app unique and lets them install it before going to an app."

Today's announcement was what Facebook spokeswoman Malorie Lucich described as a call to developers to submit images and copy so that their Facebook can consider featuring their apps. She said Facebook's App Center is designed to push the best social apps through a personalized discovery page.

If you're a person who likes word games--something Facebook would know from your Facebook behavior--the App Center will surface those sorts of apps for you. Then, when you select an app you like, you'll be sent to the Apple's App Store or Google's, depending on your device. "We're certainly not looking at it any competitive way" with Google or Apple, said Lucich.

Yet Facebook will let developers offer paid apps (users will pay a flat fee to use an app on Facebook.com). However, one can assume that with over 900 million users on the social network, there will be no shortage of developers attempting to create apps. Facebook's decision whether to list an app on the site will depend on several benchmarks governing design, user ratings and engagement. According to Brady, developers will be able to monitor how their products fare on the App Center with a new app ratings metric in Insights to report how users rate your app over time.

More than 200 apps are now integrated with Facebook, and each has more than 1 million active users.

Facebook has created an App Center guidelines page which spells out submission and eligibility criteria. The following apps will be considered:

An app on Facebook.com in a canvas page
A mobile app built for the web, iOS or Android that uses Facebook Login
A website that uses Facebook Login and has an immediately logged-in, personalized experience (see App Quality for more info)
An App for Pages built to manage or enhance other companies' Facebook Pages
After creating an application, developers will need to follow these guidelines when creating their app detail pages.
Display Name - Use the exact name of your app, with no extra words or characters.
Short & Detailed Descriptions - Describe how your app works and what makes it unique. Be accurate, so people aren't surprised when they start using it. Use standard spelling, grammar and capitalization. Don't include URLs, excessive punctuation, price information, keyword lists or non-standard symbols.
Category & Subcategory - Select a category that most people would expect. See the category descriptions for more information.
Icons - Upload attractive, relevant, original icons. Icons should be simple and free of visual clutter (for example, buttons or additional info). Different-sized icons should be similar, with no distortion and pixilation.
Cover Image - Choose an image that conveys what your app is all about. Use simple imagery that people will easily recognize, with limited text, shadows, and distracting patterns. Don't use arrows or other references to the buttons below your cover image to encourage people to install your app.
Small and Large Banners - Drive people to your app detail page with visually compelling images that clearly show the name of your app. Don't include buttons, URLs, excess text, promotions, or price information.
Screenshots - Show off unique and engaging parts of your app, and demonstrate how the app is social. Don't use images that are unrelated, misleading, or dramatically different from what most users experience.
Images (general) - Don't put calls to action (for example, "Click here" or "Play now") or arrows to Facebook UI elements in your images.

Hoodie gate: Facebook CEO's attire a sign of 'immaturity'?

Hoodie gate: Facebook CEO's attire a sign of 'immaturity'?
Financial analyst criticizes Zuckerberg for wearing a 'hoodie' at IPO road show presentation
By Sharon Gaudin, Computerworld |  Business, Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg

May 09, 2012, 9:23 PM — Of all the things discussed and analyzed surrounding Facebook's upcoming initial public offering, perhaps the most surprising -- or just plain funniest -- is co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's hoodie.
Mark Zuckerberg
Facebook launched a pre-IPO roadshow this week, meeting with investors in New York, Boston and other cities to pitch the company's stock to potential investors.

Zuckerberg was on hand to talk to investors at the first roadshow stop in New York on Monday.

The young CEO was criticized by some attendees for showing up to speak to some of the country's most influential and buttoned-down investors in jeans and a so-called "hoodie" sweatshirt. It was definitely not the suit and tie that the financial types are used to seeing corporate executives wear.

In a videotaped interview with Bloomberg News, Michael Pachter, managing director with Wedbush Securities, said Zuckerberg's decision to wear his "signature hoodie ... is actually showing investors he doesn't care very much."

"He's going to be him and he's going to do what he's always done. I think that's a mark of immaturity," Pachter added. "He's got to show [investors] the respect that they deserve because he's asking them for their money."

He said that Zuckerberg's seeming lack of respect for the process tells him that the CEO might not be perfectly suited for the CEO post in a company that's expected to complete one of the biggest IPOs in tech history.

"He most certainly is a genius and he really has done something that no one else could do," said Pachter. "I think he is well suited to be the chief product officer, the chief user experience officer ... to decide every feature that goes in. I'm not sure he's the right guy to run a corporation and to answer to shareholders."

Zuckerberg didn't attend Facebook's presentation to financial analysts in Boston on Tuesday.

Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group, said Zuckerberg's absence from the Boston meeting shouldn't hurt the firm's IPO. The company's reputation, he said, is strong enough to sell itself.

He did suggest, though, that Zuckerberg should try to act more respectful to the people he hopes will fund his company.

"Some Wall Street types are muttering about Zuckerberg's attire being disrespectful and immature, and they could be right," he said.

"It could be taken as studied indifference, arrogance, or that he simply didn't think about what he was putting on. He was there to sell Facebook as a company and the first rule of sales is that you don't give your prospective customers any reason to be uncomfortable before you start selling them," Olds added.

Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, said that on the other hand, Zuckerberg could be getting the respect of other potential investors by not pandering to his audience.

"Zuckerberg is the 'mad scientist' of Facebook and the last thing anyone needs is him suiting up and faking it," Moorhead said. "Facebook wants to be all about being real, hip, young and cool. And suits just aren't. Zuckerberg's hoodie is about as famous as Steve Jobs's black turtleneck and blue jeans. It would be ill-advised to change for a financial roadshow."

Brad Shimmin, an analyst at CurrentAnalysis, said there's a standard uniform when it comes to the financial world. And old-school suit-and-tie types may not look so kindly on the wonder kid who balks the system and doesn't dress in a manner they think is mature and respectful.

"For better or worse, that's his decision. What matters is how investors respond to that decision," said Shimmin.

"If a police officer shows up to work in shorts and a t-shirt, she will likely risk losing the respect otherwise gained from the uniform. It is the same with the leader of a globally important brand such as Facebook. It doesn't make him any less professional or capable, except perhaps in the eyes of those he wishes to influence," Shimmin added.

AT&T Says Facebook is ‘Major Force’ in Mobile Business

AT&T Says Facebook is ‘Major Force’ in Mobile Business
09/05/2012 by Emily Price on Mashable

NEW ORLEANS – Speaking during a keynote session at CTIA Wireless on Tuesday, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega said Facebook is good for his company’s business.

“I think that social networking is going to be a major force in this industry for years to come,” says Vega. “I think it helps people communicate. That’s what we do.”

T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm agreed, adding that Facebook’s social networking app was his company’s “number one app right now” and has customers “picking up their phone 150 times a day.”

When asked if Facebook was worth the same as Verizon, Verizon CEO Dan Mead said “our market value is very solid,” and that he would leave commenting on Facebook to the experts.

The CEOs of all four major carriers participated in a keynote session at CTIA entitled “Beyond LTE – Carrier Innovations.” Each CEO was given the opportunity to talk on a topic of their choice. Mead spoke on the need for spectrum.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said “it has never been more important for the industry to gain the public’s trust, ” adding that even cable and oil companies currently rate higher with consumers than mobile carriers.

Hunn talked about the need for intelligent unlimited data plans, while Vega showed off some of AT&T’s plans for home automation. He demonstrated how your smartphone can lock your doors, let you know what your kids are doing at home, and monitor energy use.

What effect do you think social networking has on mobile carriers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Facebook PAC Gives More Money to Republicans Than to Democrats

Facebook PAC Gives More Money to Republicans Than to Democrats
07/05/2012 by Alex Fitzpatrick on Mashable

Bucking the tide for technology companies, Facebook’s Political Action Committee FB PAC contributed to slightly more Republican politicians than Democrats during the first quarter of 2012.

Republican members of Congress, including Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.), were on the receiving end of $65,000 from Facebook’s PAC. Congressional Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the other hand, received slightly less: $53,500.

The minor lean to the right is unusual for a technology company, which tend to favor Democrats. For example, Microsoft has contributed $694,284 to Democrats and $477,706 to Republicans via its PAC this year, while Google has given $101,800 to Democrats and $100,000 to Republicans.

A look at technology companies’ contributions to presidential campaigns reveals a wider split. Microsoft has given $289,088 to President Obama’s re-election effort this year, compared to $71,990 for Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Comcast’s contributions offer a similar example: $157,962 to Obama and $13,750 for Romney.

The traditional logic suggests that Democrats are the more technology-friendly of the two major American political parties, but Facebook’s mostly bipartisan congressional contributions could be interpreted as the early sign of a changing tide.

Facebook also gave to several leading members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, which oversee the U.S. court system. That may reveal some of Facebook’s political strategy, as it routinely finds itself either on attack or defense in the courtroom.

The disclosure forms also revealed the top contributors to Facebook’s PAC: CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen all chipped in the maximum allowable amount of $5,000.

Does the Democrat-Republican split of Facebook’s PAC surprise you? Sound off in the comments below.

What’s America’s Most Engaging Social Network? You’ll Be Surprised

What’s America’s Most Engaging Social Network? You’ll Be Surprised
May 6, 2012 by Sam Laird on Mashable

Try to guess America’s most engaging social network. Facebook? Wrong. Twitter? Wrong. Pinterest? Wrong again. According to comScore‘s most recent social networking data, from the month of March, the San Francisco based site Tagged engages users like no other service. It was the only site to finish in the top two in both of comScore’s engagement metrics.

Tagged users visited an average of 18 times each during March according to ComScore, second only to Facebook’s average of 36 visits per vistor. And each time a Tagged user visited the site, he or she stuck around for 12.1 minutes — which trailed only Tumblr (14.7 minutes) and beat out Facebook (10.9 minutes).

Tagged co-founder and CEO Greg Tseng says he’s happy about ComScore’s March data, but that his company has been among America’s most engaging social networks for about a year now. The secret to Tagged’s success? A pivot Tseng and co-founder Johann Schleier-Smith made around the beginning of 2008.

The longtime friends started Tagged in 2004, at the time angling it to be a Facebook-like social network for high schoolers. Eventually, however, Facebook expanded beyond a closed college network and allowed anyone over the age of 12 to join.

“We took a hard look and decided we weren’t going to win,” Tseng says. “But we had found out a lot of our users were actually using Tagged to meet new people, so that led us to pivot into a new space called ‘social discovery,’ where people use sites to make new social relationships.”

As opposed to sites like Facebook, where people primarily organize and maintain relationships established offline, Tagged functions mostly as a portal to meet new people online for romance or simply friendship. The site’s algorithms encourage users to connect based on shared interests, tastes and hobbies.

Tseng says Tagged’s 10 million core monthly active users form an average of 100 million new connections per month. The site has been profitable since 2008, and over the past year tripled its staff to a current count of more than 170.

With social discovery as a whole seen by many to be a rising tide, Tseng believes Tagged’s success will continue to grow.

“If I look out at the next five or 10 years, I really see social discovery as big as social networking — in some sense I think you can think of social discovery as the engine for social networking,” he says, referencing Dunbar’s number, which theorizes that humans can maintain an average of 150 connections at a time.

“Facebook is the place where you maintain your current 150,” he says. “And Tagged will be the place where you refresh that 150.”

Do you think social discovery is the next big thing? Let us know in the comments.

Facebook for iPad Launches Retina Version — But Still No Timeline

Facebook for iPad Launches Retina Version — But Still No Timeline
April 2, 2012 by Chris Taylor on Mashable
Use Facebook on your new iPad? Then you’ll be glad of its latest incremental update, version 4.11, built for the third generation tablet’s HD retina display.

As you’d expect, all the icons and photos look much sharper. Jagged edges are banished. You can finally show off your Facebook photo albums on your new iPad without embarrassment.

There’s a host of hotly requested new features in the update, such as the ability to sign out of chat while remaining in the app (so you can browse Facebook without letting people know you’re online). Notifications, which had an annoying habit of popping up even after you’d asked them not to, have been fixed.

But there’s one feature the iPad app still lacks — support for Facebook Timeline.

This is an odd omission, given that Facebook is in the process of switching users and brands over to Timeline-based profiles at a speedy clip, whether they like it or not. All that effort designers are putting into prettifying their Timelines will be for naught if the user happens to be looking at the page on an iPad; they’ll just see the same old scrolling profile page.

We’re awaiting comment from Facebook about when we can expect to see a Timeline update. Our guess: The iPad team is scrambling to play catch-up, given that the app itself only launched in October. But we’re sure that the social network wants to show off just how cool those image-rich Timeline profiles look on a crisp retina display just as much as any designers do.

Do you like the look of Facebook photos on the new iPad? Let us know in the comments.

Not only has Red Bull taken advantage of Timeline, it has also created a scavenger hunt with prizes to get fans interacting with the company's history.

The New York Times' Timeline, which features its rather large staff as a cover photo, has highlighted moments from more than 160 years in history.

3. AT&T
AT&T's cover photo brings together an "ever-changing mosaic" of its fans' photos.

The professional soccer team has also taken advantage of Timeline's biographical features, already filling its page with content from 1908.

5. Dove
The company's fresh-faced models are featured as the cover photo for Dove's brand Page.
"Real women have been our inspiration from the very beginning. Today your photos, stories and memorable moments make up our new timeline," writes the company.

Madonna has switched over to Timeline, and is using her brightly colored album cover as her Facebook cover photo.

Coca-Cola's Timeline dates all the way back to its founding date, May 8, 1886.
"The Coca-Cola Facebook Page is a collection of your stories showing how people from around the world have helped make Coke into what it is today," writes the company.

The motorcycle company's history, dating back to 1903, is all filled out on its Timeline.

9. Nike
Nike is also an early adopter to Timeline. Its Page info dates back to 1972, when it was founded.

Kate Spade mixed designs with its cover photo and profile picture, and has filled out to its founding date in 1993.

11. Toyota
The car company's Timeline dates back to when it was founded, Oct. 31, 1957.
"We encourage you to browse through our extensive Timeline to discover (or re-discover) some of the rich history of our products, people as well as messages from our loyal fans like you," the company writes.

Coldplay has filled its Timeline all the way back to the band's first show in 1998. They've also included interesting facts about their early days as a band.

Naturally, Facebook has filled out its own Timeline as well.

14. Walmart
Walmart has its Timeline filled out back to the day it opened its doors for the first time in 1962. There are images of old stores and information about the evolution of the company.

15. Macy's
Macy's also filled out its history on Timeline, including pictures of the first "fancy dry goods store" in 1822.

16. Ford
Ford's Timeline dates back to 1903, when the first Model A sold for $850.

17. People
People has placed some of Hollywood's most familiar faces across its profile as a cover photo.

The cast of the Today Show was among a select few photos chosen to roll out the social networking site's new design.
The Timeline explores 60 years worth of history.

ESPN's SportsCenter used its colorful studio as a backdrop for the program's Timeline.

20. Lexus
Lexus has included milestones throughout its Timeline, dating all the way back to its start in 1983. The cover photo is a hybrid concept.
