Time Out New York Makes a Major Bet on ECommerce

Time Out New York Makes a Major Bet on ECommerce
by Lauren Indvik on Mashable
Online retailers have become a growing threat to lifestyle magazines over the past few years, hiring away influential editors and building their own magazine-like interactive spreads.

Now magazines are fighting back — by establishing online shops of their own.

Time Out New York, a weekly print and digital magazine covering film, theater, fashion, food and other local happenings in the New York City area, has announced that it won’t just be advertising tickets to shows and other events; it will also begin selling them. The publication introduced a redesigned website and city guide apps for iPad and iPhone devices Tuesday, through which readers will be able to purchase tickets.

This isn’t a simple affiliate scheme; Time Out New York will be managing its own inventory, a spokesperson tells Mashable.

The publication has pursued affiliate schemes as well. Visitors will be able to book restaurant reservations on the site through a relationship with OpenTable. The magazine will also begin selling discounts on events and services through partnerships with daily deal providers.

The drive to ecommerce is being driven by investors, the publication indicated in a statement. Oakley Capital Investments, a private equity fund, took a majority stake in the Time Out Group last year. The company has since made more than 60 digital hires, and partnered with digital and mobile startups including Foursquare.

We expect the move into online retail will become a trend among lifestyle magazines seeking to compensate for declining print ad revenues. Many magazines have already incorporated scannable 2D barcodes into their print editions in an attempt to drive sales at advertisers’ mobile websites.

Others have partnered with retailers in affiliate and promotional schemes. Vogue, for instance, sold merchandise directly from its website through a partnership with fashion retail startup Moda Operandi during New York Fashion Week last September.

The electric DeLorean will hit the U.S. market in 2013. The latest DeLorean still comes with recognizable gull-wing doors, a stainless steel body and a rear-mounted engine

Although DeLoreans typically run for $65,000, the electric model will cost $95,000.

Steering Wheel
The electric DeLorean is expected to get about the same mileage as a Nissan Leaf, running about 100 miles on a full charge.

iPhone Dock
In addition to an iPhone dock, the company plans to add iOS controls to the vehicle with the inclusion of apps.

Rear Engine
The vehicle features a 32-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery system.

"Where we're going we don't need gas!"
The DeLorean may be best known for its role as the unlikely time machine in the Back to the Future films, but it has attracted the attention of car collectors and fans years following the movie’s 1985 debut.

Original DeLorean
An original version of the gas-powered DeLorean was also on display at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. Both of the winged doors were open for all to see.

The not-yet-released electric version of the iconic DeLorean sports car featured in the Back to the Future films has arrived at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, touting an iPhone dock, Bluetooth capabilities and a battery-powered engine.

The electric DeLorean, which will hit the U.S. market in 2013, was originally announced in October 2011 but it’s making a surprise appearance at the auto show this week.

The latest DeLorean still comes with recognizable gull-wing doors, a stainless steel body and a rear-mounted engine. However this sucker is electrical: It features a 32-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion phosphate battery system. It’s still sporty, too: The car can go from 0 mph to 60 mph in less than six seconds.

Although DeLoreans typically run for $65,000, the electric model will cost $95,000.

“The electric DeLorean is a natural progression for the vehicle — it has everything that people expect in cars today that you couldn’t get back in 1981 with the original model,” James Espey, vice president of DeLorean, told Mashable.

The DeLorean may be best known for its role as the unlikely time machine in the Back to the Future movies, but it has attracted the attention of car collectors and fans years following the movie’s 1985 debut.

“People still love that movie and as younger people see it for the first time, they go online and learn more about the DeLorean,” Espey said, noting that orders for the DeLorean are mostly placed by people in their 30s and 40s. “We are never going to be a mass production type of company, but for low-volume, niche-market cars, there is a demand.”

Espey said that the electric DeLorean will get about the same mileage as a Nissan Leaf, running about 100 miles on one electric charge.

“Anyone can buy a Prius or a Tesla, but if you want something collectible and different than what anyone else has, this is it. It certainly attracts attention.”

Moving forward, the company plans to add iOS controls to the vehicle with the inclusion of apps. The first deliveries of the car itself will take place in February or early March of next year.

“Starting in January, we will be making three DeLoreans a week,” Espey said. “Depending on order volume, it will be a mixture of gas and electric — one week we may do two electric and one gas or vice versa.”

200 Ryan Gosling-Themed Easter Eggs Hidden in New York City

200 Ryan Gosling-Themed Easter Eggs Hidden in New York City
by Brian Anthony Hernandez on Mashable

Ryan Gosling Easter in NYC
Meme machine Ryan Gosling (or someone pretending to be the heartthrob actor) has set up a Twitter account that encourages people to hunt for 200 Easter eggs hidden in New York City.
Each egg includes a picture of Gosling and clever Easter-themed messages such as “Hop on over to my house already.” The slips of paper are signed, “Happy Easter from Ryan Gosling. Tweet your egg @GoslingEaster.”
That Twitter handle has been tweeting clues to the colorful eggs’ whereabouts, interacting with followers and congratulating people who have found them.
Digital strategist Leigh Ferreira found eggs after prodding @GoslingEaster for help (see tweets below). “It was a fun use of Twitter and @GoslingEaster was egging us on,” Ferreira told Mashable.
Update: The creator of @GoslingEaster is advertising copywriter Jenna Livingston, who told Mashable she is not connected to Gosling in any way. “I did this project to follow up with another project I did earlier in the year that went viral — Starbucks Spelling,” Livingston says. “I had a blast doing that, and interacting with people, so I figured why not try something else and see if it can go viral, too.”
Ferreira was at brunch with friends when she decided to venture over to the nearest park, Sara D. Roosevelt Park. “There were two other eggs near the one we found. Two had notes, the other was just the plastic egg,” she says. “We read the note, took a pic and left it for others to find.”
The festive Twitter account was created on Saturday and has tweeted 242 times. One-hundred fifty accounts follow @GoslingEaster.
“The reception has been great,” Livingston says. “People are really loving stumbling upon eggs, as well as hunting for them on their own. Who knew! I don’t know how many eggs have been found, the number keeps changing throughout the day.”
New Yorkers, have you discovered any of the eggs? If so, share an image of it and the message in the comments below.
